In just one hour from the Sighetu Marmației border, southeast of the Maramureș Mountains Natural Park, lies the town of Vișeu de Sus. This town is famous for its historic narrow-gauge train, known as Mocăniță. The locomotives are steam-powered, and these railways were originally built for cargo and passenger services during the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, before 1918. Although they fell into disrepair over the years, some are now being rehabilitated for tourism purposes.

The Maramureș Mountains Natural Park is located in the north-central part of Romania, close to the Ukrainian border, in the northeastern part of Maramureș County, within the Maramureș Mountains, a range that is part of the Carpathians and the Bucovina Mountains.
